I heard about a talk happening at the Fine Cell Work offices in Victoria and I was intrigued. What can I say, I had been expecting basic cross stitch. When I walked in I was blown away by the quality and complexity of the stitch work and the colourful designs. It was very distracting listening to a talk while gazing at all the cushions thinking...that one would look good on my sofa, no wait, that one, or hmm maybe that one... All the sewing is done by inmates to help them pass the time while locked in their cell, focusing their energies and enabling them to gain confidence and learn a new skill. The inmates are paid for their work and you could see how seriously the work was taken and how proud they are of their finished pieces. It was heartwarming to see just how appreciated and beneficial the enterprise is.

I pinched these facts from their website:

• Fine Cell Work is now done in 26 prisons

• 80% of the stitchers are men

• In 2008, 403 fine cell workers earned a total of £61,890

• The inmates are taught by 50 volunteer instructors

• All classes have waiting lists

• In 2008 they had roughly 150 offers of volunteering

• In 2004-08 they had enquiries from 63 prisons which they did not have the resources to meet

A quilt put together by numerous inmates was exhibited by curator Sue Prichard at the quilting exhibition at the V&A (Quilts: 1700 - 2010); the design was based on the Panopticon design of Wandsworth Prison. Do please look at the variety of beautiful work on the Fine Cell Work website.

I love stitch but am so impatient with it (yes I once did about a square inch and then photoshopped the rest), have to admit am thinking of commissioning a stitched design for one of my bags...though maybe a smaller one than the one featured in the latest issue of Remedy Magazine :)

Editors Letter as featured in Remedy magazine issue 8 ‘The Mad Hatter’

Sometimes I feel as though we do live in a bit of a wonderland, its full of inspiring natural beauty, you can’t help but want to discover more and understand as much as possible about it. But just like Alice’s wonderland our world is full of a lot of nonsense and mad hatters (I call them politicians), the rich are getting richer and the poor are getting poorer. As our technology grows and allows us to communicate to an international audience, our next generation are feeling lonelier then ever, and people are dying as a result of greed. I don’t need to go on, we are all aware about our planets problems, and in our own small or big ways we are all trying to change things. But where does this leave us creatives? What’s our role here? Yes we love what we do and admittedly probably get a little too obsessive about it, but soon come down to earth when we realise that when there is a real crisis no one will call out “ is there a fashion designer in the house… or photographer, or artist, or even an illustrator?”

The answer came to me a few years ago, I met the editor of a very famous fashion magazine. She boasted about the fact that children as young as 6 love looking at her magazine and want to be like the models they see, later she remarked that they used size zero models because clothes look better on them and made it clear that she couldn’t care less about the effect this may have on young girls. Here was a woman with an incredibly powerful and influential tool, I couldn’t help but question how far will we go for fashion or any other creative talent for that matter. When should we start taking responsibility for what we put out there. This is just one of the many experiences that inspired me to create Remedy. I decided to create a magazine to offer an alternative to the majority of magazines out there, one that focuses on actual talent and skills, not what size you are, or how much money you have, or what background you come from. As these are often the messages portrayed in media and often the things people use to cover up any real achievement. It takes hard work to have real talent, even people who are born with talent have to work hard to maintain and make it grow into something substantial. It’s far easier to knock others down in order to make you feel good, to hide behind looks, money, or thinking that your culture or education is better then someone else’s, then to really look at yourself and be proud of yourself.

‘Be the change you want see in the world’ this saying by the legendary Gandhi resonates in me. I quickly realised that rather then complaining about this world, just get up and do something about, even if you inspire just one other person, it’s worth it. Yes it is a drop in a vast ocean but the ripple effect is an incredible thing, didn’t trail blazers like Gandhi, Martin Luther King, Nadine Gordimer, to name a few, start out just like you and me? Normal human beings, just trying to get on and understand this vast wonderland. Who knows what we are really capable of?

I wanted to create a magazine that promoted real talent, which would encourage others to be proud of their skills, if we feature a fashion shoot it’s not about telling people what to wear or how they should look. We focus on the talent and hard work behind the camera, the photographers, the fashion designers, the stylist etc. We especially celebrate people who take even small steps in insuring that they are ethically aware in their pursuit of creativity. I’m very honoured to have been able to do this, and hope that it shows that you can to. I’m very humbled by the feedback I get through emails or meeting people who love Remedy, and to hear it’s inspired more people then I could have ever imagined, to be proud and promote their talents, and to be a positive role models to the next generation. Last night I had the strangest dream, I dreamt I was Alice sitting at a tea party with great influential characters from past and present. All discussing world politics and issues whilst dunking custard cream biscuits in cups of Earl Grey tea. Darwin kicked off by reciting his quote from his book The Decent of Man;

“At some future period, not very distant as measured by centuries, the civilized races of man will almost certainly exterminate, and replace, the savage races throughout the world. At the same time the anthropomorphous apes ... will no doubt be exterminated. The break between man and his nearest allies will then be wider, for it will intervene between man in a more civilized state, as we may hope, even than the Caucasian, and some ape as low as a baboon, instead of as now between the Negro or Australian and the gorilla” (Darwin 1887:156).

Cheryl Tweedy interrupted and said that Darwin was not racist, he was just a product of his time, but then paused and thought to herself, then added “hold on William Wilberforce was around at the same time as Darwin and he fought for racial equality, so how could Darwin be a product of his time when people had realised back then that racism was wrong?” She then shook her head as if to shake the question out of her head and offered me some candy pink lip gloss, and said that I was worth it.

I politely refused and turned to Obama who was talking about Mary Seacole, who was just as incredible as Florence Nightingale but never got the recognition, even though she had to work twice as hard and had to fund herself in order to help those injured in war. He then spoke about Jeanette Rankin who fought for women’s rights and campaigned for peace. Freud, who was listening in on the conversation, remarked on how incredible that was whilst Young spoke over him and recited one of Freud’s famous quotes;

"Women oppose change, receive passively, and add nothing of their own," (Freud 1925 paper entitled ‘The Psychical Consequences of the Anatomic Distinction Between the Sexes’).

Just then I found myself sitting next to Gandhi. The dream turned in to a nightmare as excitement overtook the control of my mouth and I uttered the most embarrassing comment, and to top it off, in a Star Wars fanatic manner, “ I love the bit when king George V, who did not understand that the clothes you wore were to symbolise the oppressed poor people of the world, publicly made a negative comment on what you wore when you went to meet him, and you said ‘the king was wearing enough clothes for the both of us’ that was so cool Gandhi.” I woke up in a cold sweat of horror! Oh the shame! But then complete relief as I realised it was just a crazy dream.

It did get me thinking though, through this bizarre tea party, I saw that no matter how incredible I think someone is, I have to look at all aspects of them, everything they had to say and everything they chose to do, if I’m going to look up to them. Always stay open minded, take the good things you’ve leant from them and learn from the bad. Not to just brush the bad bits under the carpet. Don’t we all deserve the best role models? Because we are all worth it. Tea anyone?

New Designer Ruweyda Dool launches her Spring/Summer 2011 Collections. Womenswear / Menswear / Childrenswear

Hey everyone, I’ve just completed my latest Spring/Summer collections for 2011 and as you can see on my website (linked below), I have branched out in not only Menswear but Childrenswear also; which illustrates diversity in my target market.
The theme in which I have been inspired by for the Menswear collection is Old English which illustrates my British culture & nationality. The garments consist of clean cut checked shirts, corduroy shorts/trousers, bow ties and waist coats.
On the other hand with the Women’s & Childrenswear collections the garments are very naturally coloured and simple yet effective; which lightly balances out the proportions. With these pieces I also use hint of ethnicity through the jewellery to bring out my part African ethnicity.

These pieces are only just the beginning of what I have to offer for the New Year Guys!! You will be seeing me expand into more of a vintage, innovative yet creative outlook in my garments.

It seems that celebrities are happy to lend their name to many a cause, but feminism isn’t one of them. Apparently, equal rights for men and women just isn’t cool enough these days.
But is it that really surprising when most female singers are happy to fawn all over some butt ugly rapper in their music videos, or when most of the modern day rom-coms are based on the old cliché of men being commitment phobic and women being desperate for a relationship.
Is this really how far we have come? It just seems to me like we have almost gone backwards! Although women can now vote, choose what to wear and have better career prospects, it still appears that the only way a women can make as say a TV presenter is to pose in her chuddies for a mens mag, or if a female artist or director wants to get noticed she has to do something controversial to even get a look in.. Why is it so difficult to name 3 female film directors? Or when was the last time you watched a television programme when the female presenter wasn’t immaculately made up whilst the male presenter had just turned up in the clothes he slept in?
Maybe its time for a re-branding, to set young girls sights higher again and to bring a common goal to both men and women, as I am sure there are plenty of sensible guys out there who are getting bored this too! There were many men who supported the suffragette movement back in Emeline Pnakhursts’ day so I am sure there are many today who want some equality and some sensibility!

KODACHROME. An epitaph. By photographer Pablo Antoli

On the last days of 2010 in Parsons, Kansas the independent photo-lab Dwayne’s Photo developed the last rolls of legendary film Kodachrome. After the announcement of the end of the film’s production in 2009, Dwayne’s Photo eventualy became the only lab enabled to process Kodachrome.

In the age of Flickr and Facebook it may seem incomprehensible to long for a roll of film but during many of the 74 years of it’s production Kodachrome was the choice of professionals and amateurs to photograph from National Geographic assignments to everyday experiences. So what made this film so special? Kodachrome was one of the first commercially available colour films; first in motion picture formats and almost immediately for still photography. It’s unique process where colour dyes were added during development made the emulsion layer thinner which ultimately resulted in a sharper image since less light was dispersed through the celluloid. Kodachrome’s colour rendition and archival qualities (particularly when kept in the dark) were also exceptional making it the stock of choice for photographers like Steve McCurry (http://www.stevemccurry.com), Alex Webb (http://www.magnumphotos.com/alexwebb) and David Alan Harvey (http://www.davidalanharvey.com/).

I, like many unfortunates, spun the wheel of fate and came up short for 2010. I'm hesitant to think it was Karma giving me a kick up the backside because I do try to be a good person - kind, honest, considerate etc. So I have to assume that either 2010 was just jinxed from the start or (in a more glass half full view of the world) that I am due an awesome 2011....and I don't think I'm only one! I am currently taking a much needed rest from my second (and much more loved) job of working at Berwick Museum and Art Gallery and am trying to find ways to get this new year kicked off to a more exciting, positive and promising start. I've decided that the best approach is to bombard my senses with all things creative. So! Here goes...

To start my personal New Year, with the idea of starting as I mean to go on, I have haphazardly found myself following a few simple steps. I'd like to say it was all part of an ingenious plan to feel happier about turning the very ancient age of 27 on the 2nd January but unfortunately I'm just not that clever or that organised. Instead I simply started off in a very good mood and tried to keep myself that way.

Step one: Fun

I spent a day being a kid again. Yes its a simple concept and yes I do probably act like a kid throughout most of my 9 till 5 days (and beyond) but it is still one of the most fantastically fun and freeing things in the world. I spent a day with two of my nieces (one is 5 years and the other is 8). We played with a magical moulding marvel known as Moonsand, building castles and decorating princesses. We designed jewel covered compact mirrors and handbags, watched animated movies and painted our faces with lots of pretty colours. I also rode around the kitchen on a purple scooter (at which point my 13 year old nephew laughed and told me that my balance was rubbish)...... Now that I think about it, that was quite possibly the girliest day of my life!

Step Two: Treats

I of course went shopping! Now what, you may ask, can a girl on a budget who has a fear of clothes shopping (due to the recent consumption of her own weight in holiday food delights) possibly buy in the January sales??? Well I shocked myself and delighted my bank balance by treating myself (and my non-boyfriend boyfriend... its complicated!) to a £3 suspender belt and £2 silk stockings! And yes, I must say that even with my plus size curves and many many confidence issues mucho fun was had.

Step Three: Art
We all need a little culture, heritage and art in our lives. From making a boring day at the office fun by sending your colleagues smiley faces in an email to recreating a master piece in oil paints (like my super cool 80 year old -technologically way more advanced than me - granddad did recently). I decided to try out a little arts and crafts by using recycled paper carrier bags, images from old magazines and a few Xmas gift wrapping scraps. I made me some pretty nifty looking scrap books to give to friends. You can personalise them to your hearts content. Use it as a keep sake for things like photos, love letters, gig or festival tickets, bus tickets and all the other useless stuff we like to hold on to for trips down memory lane. There are plenty of websites online for top tips on how to make useful or fun things out of everyday household items and this isn't just for the ladies - boys... think Valentines day!

Step Four: Music

Here is a little ''verse'' I wrote one night while trying to drift off to the land of make believe and scantily clad men (OK so to be honest my dreams aren't particularly sheksy but imagination is a fun thing)!....

This music and lyrics drifts across the void to reach me

Reverberates up my spine to heal my pain

I only feel rhythm through my vein

No more darkness in this hollow night

No more pain to fill this fractured sight

This music and lyrics stills my heart

I only feel the beat beneath these stars

Although I'm no a huge follower of bands and artists and couldn't give you an A-Z list of DJs names or a top 10 guide to the most influential bands of the decade, I do think music plays a huge part in our lives. People don't really realise how much it features in everyday life. The world has a soundtrack and we are just so used to hearing it in the peripheral that we neglect to truly listen.

I enjoy most types of music and can fall asleep happy and contented to the sound of a guitar. I like artists who have soulful, gravelly or unusual voices or whose accents come through in their singing. I currently live in the very lovely but ridiculously Arctic-like Newcastle upon Tyne and little by little I am embracing Geordie spirit. Below is a link for a Geordie rap artist. He writes his own raps and songs and plays the piano and is self-taught . I am not the biggest fan of rap but I love how this artist has stayed true to his culture and upbringing and has found a way to express himself and do what he loves regardless. I believe we can all benefit from the inspiration of others such as people like this artist and hopefully embrace our own passions and loves and find ways to express ourselves in 2011.

Surface Designer Cathy Hoste on Junky Styling

A few summers ago I was able to convince Kerry and Annika to let me help out at Junky Styling one day a week. I had a bit of a cheek as I had no fashion experience to speak of at that time, however, I think my background at Greenpeace swung it in my favour.
Junky Styling is pioneering high fashion which uses solely recycled materials. Based at the Truman Brewery in Brick Lane there is always a buzz about the place and the sewing team are extremely talented and committed. Admittedly to start with I was unpicking suits for the fabrics to be re-used (I was assured this was a very important job) rather than creating couture. However I learnt loads and after a while I even made a basque which they used to entice customers to their stall at a fair in Paris.
Annika and Kerry have been friends for years and, after travelling together and influenced by seeing recycled clothing in San Francisco and Tokyo they were inspired to set up Junky Styling in 1997 and haven't looked back since. While travelling they would make outfits for their nights out from suits purchased at the local charity shops. Feedback out and about was so positive they knew they were on to something.
They have since participated at London Fashion Week many times, published the book ‘Junky Styling – Wardrobe Surgery’, lectured at the V&A and were featured in The Apprentice series 2010 (episode 5):

New York Fashion Week: Plus-size models take centre stage

As the world's highest-profile fashion event, New York Fashion Week typically features women no larger than a size six. But last night history was made when “plus-sized” models were sent down the catwalk for the first time.

Dozens of models, all over a size 16, wore a range of outfits from cargo shorts and cropped trousers to dresses and jeans.
The audience, which included Precious actress Gabourey Sidibe, rose to its feet to applaud the models at the end of the show.
It was organised by American fashion label OneStopPlus.com, which caters for women a UK size 16 and up.

London Fashion Week begins tomorrow, with designer Mark Fast expected to again fly the flag for larger models by using them in his catwalk show.

Make-up tattoos for girl, 14, defended by mother

At Remedy we believe very strongly in encouraging people to realise and promote their talents, rather then have shallow fickle values that revolve around looks and quick fame. It can be damaging to the next generation, and lead to low self esteem. The recent story about the 14 year old having makeup tattooed on her face, yet again highlights the desperate need for change, the need for a Remedy.

The mother of a 14-year-old County Durham girl who has had make-up tattooed on her face said they did not take the decision lightly. Sophie Watson, from Spennymoor, had her eyebrows tattooed and lip and eye liner applied.
Her mother Joy said she gave permission for the treatment for her daughter, who competes in beauty pageants.
Child charity the NSPCC criticised the move and said girls should not be treated as "sex objects".
Ms Watson said she accepted what she had let her daughter do sounded shocking but said the changes were subtle.
It is illegal for an artist to tattoo anyone under the age of 18 - but the make-up procedure is not technically classed as a tattoo. Although needles and an anaesthetic are used, it is classed as a cosmetic procedure and is not permanent because it fades after between two and five years. However, Sophie does have two illegal tattoos - her name written on her wrist and flowers emblazoned on her stomach. She had them done without telling her mother and no-one has been prosecuted because she will not reveal the tattooist's name. Sophie said she was also hoping to have her freckles lasered off in the future and was glad to have the make-up tattoos. She said: "I am happy. I just look a lot better.
"I like it now that it is always there and I don't need to bother with it every morning."

Her mother, who is a beauty therapist, said she gave permission for the make-up treatment.
She said: "I think she is old enough to be making these decisions with support from me.
"It wasn't something we looked into lightly."
"It's done to enhance her features, it's not done to change her, to make her look like somebody else. It's not done to change the way she looks."

But a spokeswoman for the NSPCC said: "The danger is that a growing climate of sexualisation encourages a view of girls as sex objects...

"All children should be valued for their abilities and talent. They should be free to grow up as children."

"Sadly, we have reached a point where many children get distressed because they think they don't look good."

"For some vulnerable children, this can even lead to mental health problems."

Over 250 Elephants Stampede through London

Elephant Parade is a conservation campaign that shines a multi-coloured spotlight on the urgent crisis faced by the endangered Asian elephant. Brought to you by www.elephantfamily.org, the event sees over 250 brightly painted life-size elephants located over central London this summer.

Each decorated by a different artist or celebrity, the elephants brighten and beautify the city, enhancing every park, street corner and building they grace. Running from May to July 2010, this is London’s biggest outdoor art event on record. With an estimated audience of 25 million, wthe elephant parade aims to raise £2 million for the Asian elephant and benefit 20 UK conservation charities.

In the past century, numbers of the Asian elephant has tumbled from 250,000 to just 25,000 and if this trend continues, the species will be extinct by 2050.

All of the elephants are for sale by auction and every bid you place is a bid for habitat. Mini elephants are available at Selfridges, 80 Regent St, 36 Carnaby St and Greenwich Central Market. Happy elephant spotting!

Elephant parades have already been held in Antwerp and Rotterdam, and after London it will move to New York and Milan.

"If you’re on Facebook, and haven’t been living under a rock today, you probably saw my 300 updates about my feature in this issue of Remedy Magazine, London! Ok, so I’m exaggerating a little bit – but this was a huge deal for me. This year has brought me a lot of amazing opportunities, but as I stress about starting my own business, and finding my place in this world of photography-saturated markets, I’m reminded about why I do what I do. It never started as a way to make money, but for many of us, I don’t think it ever does.

I started in photography as a way to express myself. It was about being someone I wasn’t. Photography made me popular, if you will. I could become anyone, or anything, I dreamed. I could surround myself with Gucci and Jimmy Choo, with models and stylists – artists and dreamers. It’s never an easy place to be, surrounded in self-doubt and competition.

This is where Remedy comes in.

What is a dream worth? It’s too often that value isn’t placed on talent. I’m reminded of this every day when I get asked to lower my prices on portraits, weddings – anything. It’s easy to take the lower prices, because bills are due and life gets in the way, but then what would I be saying about myself? That I’m not worth the price I charge? I can’t go through life doubting myself, my business, or my talents. I don’t want to get on some huge soapbox about pricing, that’s not the point of this – but if you’re a potential client (of any photographer, artist, stylist…) remember that an artist is a dream-maker. What dream can we paint for you?

Remedy was started a year ago by Farhana Jaffer. Her goal was simple: “Remedy wants to encourage the new generation to look at their own talents and be inspired by it and others around them, we only promote those who have done, or are working towards doing something positive with their lives. We offer a platform for people to promote their work on an international stage.”

Remedy promotes photographers, designers, artists, poets, singers – the list goes on. Remedy promotes the arts, and that’s why you should love Remedy, and everything they stand for. It was an honor to be selected for their magazine as a featured artist, and I’m grateful for the opportunity to share my dreams with so many others."

Everywhere people are boasting about how much chocolate they're going to scoff this Easter, just like every Easter before. You can't help but wonder where this tradition has come from? And do we really care anymore?

These days Easter is best known as the Christian celebration of the resurrection of Jesus. But the actual practices that involves eggs and even the word Easter, interestingly has Pagan roots.

Easter
The word "Easter" is named after Eastre, the Anglo-Saxon goddess of spring. A festival was held in her honor every year at the vernal equinox.

The Easter Bunny
The Easter Bunny is a rabbit-spirit. Long ago, he was called the "Easter Hare", hares and rabbits have frequent multiple births so they became a symbol of fertility. The custom of an Easter egg hunt began because children believed that hares laid eggs in the grass. The Romans believed that "All life comes from an egg.

Painting Eggs
In ancient Egypt, Greece, Rome and Persia eggs were dyed for spring festivals. In medieval Europe, beautifully decorated eggs were given as gifts.

I was watching a documentary about slums, and how people have to live to survive, it highlighted to me just how powerful the TV is. I had no idea just how bad the situation is. This TV screen was showing me in great detail just what is happening, and that we in the west are so privileged and there is a lot we could be doing to help. Just then came an add break, a bombardment of plastic faced women telling me I deserve to have shiny hair, longer lashes and baby like skin ‘because I’m worth it”. It just felt so wrong, this TV screen was giving me completely contradicting messages. One minute I’m shown a women forced to work in a landfill so that she can put her children through school, the next I’m being told my eyes should be perfectly lined with thicker lashes and that I should be worrying about wrinkles! We have such a powerful communicative tool, what are we doing with it? Enforcing hiding behind fickle ideals rather then encouraging each other to look at how easily we could help others.

A child dies every 15 seconds in the slums, but my lips can stay glossy for up to 24hours.

We need a Remedy!

Over 30% of Primary school children in Britain assume they will be famous when they grow up. Over 50% of 16-19 year olds want to be famous, less then a quarter of them say they are going to use a talent to achieve this. The rest say they will achieve fame through reality TV shows like Big Brother.

We need a Remedy!
If we go back just 40 years, in the 60’s when TV was black and white, you would only see people with actual talent in the public eye like writers, artist, actors and actresses, dancers etc. In fact it was always like that, even before TV. During Victorian times people like poets, painters, scientist and doctors were celebrated and promoted in the public. And we certainly would not still be celebrating people like Michelangelo if all we did was sit around doing nothing all day. We have always looked up to talent and aspired to achieving it.

Fast forward to the year 2000 where we are introduced to a new brand of ‘celebrity’ through Big Brother. It was challenging morality and privacy, which was both shocking and thrilling at the same time. Suddenly, here was a group of people on our TV screens with no talent, no glamour and a complete lack of inhibition. We felt these were REAL people that we could relate to. But as soon as they left the Big Brother house, they were launched into fame and money.
Suddenly anyone could be rich and famous and we became obsessed with it.
For the following 10 years to the present day we are bombarded with reality TV shows churning out even more ‘celebrities‘ with no talent or positive attributes for our society. And as a result, our aspirations have hit an all time low. People are out purely to seek fame and fortune, and do not care about how they will attain it. It’s a parasite on young peoples self esteem, there is little or no encouragement to achieve higher education and discover our talents and be proud of them. Or to be satisfied with what we have and live within our means. We want everyone to know and like us and to be filthy rich, then we will be happy. The sad thing is that we can all name ‘celebrities’ who have all of that and are constantly in and out of rehab or have even taken their own lives.

The meaning of the word fame has changed dramatically in the past 10 years, it has completely lost it’s integrity, to be famous once meant that you were well known for your talent or because you had achieved something incredible, like Martin Luther King, Florence Nightingale and Mahatma Gandhi. The word came with respect and credibility. Now fame is immediately associated to being a celebrity, it’s cheap and lacks merit. Lets bring back it’s original meaning, as fame and money are not bad things, it is what you do with it and how you gain and attain it that can be destructive. In it’s original context, fame can help spread an incredible message across the world and money can save lives.

This is why we are Remedy. We promote people with talent and principles. We recognise our responsibility as creatives in the media and are constantly working for an even better tomorrow for future generations. We want to encourage everyone to challenge what you see and hear in the media and to champion all that helps you progress.

The magazine editor was unrepentant. There was no way she about to give away column inches over some poncy art exhibition when a genuine artist like Juggy D was about to reveal all about his inside leg measurements!
It's all a bit pathetic.
There are regular exhibitions at places such as the V&A and the Saatchi Gallery, highly acclaimed cultural music and dance shows everywhere from the South Bank of London to the Mac Arts Centre in Birmingham, dedicated theatre tropes such as Watermans and Tamasha putting on plays in every corner of the country - all highlighting things that are Asian through and through.
Still, it's not really our thing, apparently. Luckily I know plenty of people who disagree. Which is why I set up Remedy magazine- a publication that promotes artistic visions of creative people from all walks of life. Here, we don't consider any form of expression as pretentious, or dumb down our editorial in case people don't get it. We're not elitist. Even the shallowest of girls, obsessed with little more beyond beauty, can realise that make-up is an art form. Why not help try open her perfectly lined eyes to other art forms?
Even if you agree with me, can you really argue with the editor of Asiana who dismissed the arts as irrelevant to the to the Asian community? When was the last time you read a review of a play or an exhibition in this very magazine's Asiana Crush section...and actually went to it?

HOW TO FAKE A GIRL BAND!

This project was a social experiment to see how powerful branding and the media are. Also to see if the music industry is as fickle as people say it is. Is image given more importance than real musical TALENT?

Well, in attempt to answer this question, I created a girl band in 4 weeks who looked the part but didn’t actually sing! Presenting Diamante…

First I started by finding three other girls to join me and form what would look like a girl band. After doing a lot of research on other bands, I arranged a couple of shoots with the girls in the typical girl band style. Then with a little bit of Photoshop work, we were ready to go!

I decided to call the band ‘Diamante’ as we were a fake girl band and diamante is a fake diamond, clever ay?

Within days of producing a website, myspace page and facebook, we were getting offers from producers to sing on peoples tracks, and even perform at live gigs! The scary thing was, no one knew what we sounded like, no samples or tracks by the band were on any of the pages as they didn’t actually exist! All the pages solely consisted of images of the band and a brief introduction that read:

“Diamante is the hottest new girl band to hit the UK. Having already taken Europe by storm, the four girls, hand picked from across the globe to create the ultimate girl band, are now set to dazzle the Brits. Farhana, Tala, Rishika and Ese are the incredibly talented ladies chosen from thousands for their unique styles. Diamante's musical style is very versatile with influences from each member’s hometown and pop culture. 'There's something on the album for everyone' says lead singer Farhana from the UK. 'We decided to take a risk with our UK debut single and have chosen to release a garage remix' says Tala from Lebanon. Rishika from India continues, 'it's a funky track that proved to be very popular with our fans across Europe'. Ese born in Uganda adds ' the track is a tribute to a group that we all admired whilst growing up, we know you'll love it as much as we do!”

As shocking as the results were, I’m not claiming that this is clear evidence that the music industry is fickle, just maybe something that we should think about and question. As a society, are we promoting looks and not any real talent? Do we look up to people for their talents or people who are just look the part? What are we getting out of it?

Some of these manufactured bands and artists are being idolised by people, young girls and boys wanting to be like them, mimicking what they do, how they dress and behave, without thinking. It’s always important to question who and why you look up to someone.

At remedy we believe in promoting people with real talent not just looks, and it’s their talents and achievements that make them so much more attractive.

My garments are the epitome of elegance in which I gain inspiration from the runway designs of my role models and designers that have graced the runway before her. Fashion has been an integral part of my life from styling and giving fashion tips to my peers to learning how to sew from a young age and since then I’ve pursued my dream of creating garments embellished with detail. "I am 28 years old and I come from the island of Crete, in the southern part of Greece. I started working as a graphic designer four years ago, mostly on print projects. A year ago, I decided to leave Greece and move to London for studies. I am currently in a BA graphic design course at Central Saint Martins and in this 2nd year I think I'm starting to realize why I have always wanted to do graphic design: endless possibilities. At the beginning, I was fascinated by magazines and books and posters, but as I learn and see and experience more about what graphic design I realize how many ways there are to use it - not just as a product, but mostly as an idea. An idea that can touch people, make them stop and take a closer look, or help them find their way around a city, or read a telephone bill. I am inspired mostly by typography and photography and if I was allowed to use grids in every single project, I would be a very happy designer. Less is more would be a suitable motto to describe my approach to graphic design and a very nice logo for a t-shirt".

"Mr KaBz is- An Individual, A Persona, and A Brand.

I’m an individual who started creating something out of admiring the surroundings and decided for change really.

A lot of people I know do tend to call me different, especially when it comes to dress sense and personality. I do like to be ‘Out There’ as I don’t tend to blend in with the crowd. What makes me “me” is my creativity and imagination which has always been one of my strong points.

I’ve been designing for about 2 years now; it’s either quite a long time or not a very long time at all. I feel in the 2 years I could have accomplished a lot more but at the same time I have gained a lot of valuable experience which helped me grow as an individual, helped my art work, make me more business orientated and help me set and accomplish goals
Initially I started because I got bored of being a clone in the clothing industry, wherever I went I saw people wearing clothes which I wanted to buy or already own, no individuality was present as most people I felt followed trends and styles rather than creating their own. Always having a passion for street art I decided I could apply the art work onto clothing and grab the attention of everyone.
Right now I’m focusing on several of projects from designing clothing to canvases to participating to different various.

"As an artist jeweller I specialise in working with unusual techniques, materials and inspirations. My design philosophy is to always try something new and to keep pushing the boundaries of my work to create something fascinating you will not have seen before.

Working in titanium, other reactive metals, precious metals and a self developed photo-inlay technique I create sculptural pieces designed to make the wearer feel fantastic. All photographs I use in my inlay are taken by me and pushed through a digital translation process to become a jewel.

I am inspired to create light colourful and structural jewellery by the speed, beauty and precision design of Formula 1 cars and the opulence of Tudor and Stuart Lace cuffs and the colour and layering of Japanese kimono.

I work closely with digital images and use those images in both two and three dimensions. I create pieces of small sculpture wearable as personal adornment and Photopaintings in limited editions.

The original images in both my painting and jewellery becomes part of the new work dissipating its original coherence into a new form. It is impossible to tell what the original image represented. In its new life the picture bleeds into and lives on in the piece that partly takes its inspiration from the image it destroyed in its creation."

Welcome to Remedy magazine's blog. We are nearly a year old now and are currently creating more ways to promote REAL global talent within the creative arts.
